A man in his 30s was rescued Sunday afternoon after becoming stranded on an outcropping of rocks amid high surf in West Hawaii.

Responding to the 12:39 p.m. alarm, Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived at Lekeleke Bay, commonly known as “End of the World” in Keauhou to learn from witnesses that the man had intentionally jumped into the water to go swimming.

“Due to poor judgment and the large surf the victim was unable to exit the water along the shoreline,” a press release reads.

The man was able to make it up onto an outcropping of rocks where he got stranded, requiring the use of a county helicopter and Billy Pugh net to bring him to safety.

The victim was evaluated by medics, but declined treatment.
